December New Moon: Working towards Liberation

There will be a new moon in Purva Ashadha nakshatra in Sagittarius on December 30th. Purva Ashada's symbol is a winnowing basket, the basket used to separate wheat from the chaff in the husking process (this represents discernment). Its shakti is the power to energize. Its deity is Apas the god that rules the water element. Its meaning is ‘the early victory’.

This is the second time this year that there has been a new moon in this nakshatra, giving extra importance to the ideas it represents about its philosophical and spiritual nature to strip away the ego and work towards moksha (spiritual liberation). Practices related to purification and cleansing pride and selfishness are supported, and the surrender to a higher power.

Sagittarius is symbolized by the centaur. It is the 9th sign of the zodiac and ruled by Jupiter. When not aspected by malefic planets, it’s the sign of truth, knowledge, freedom, and abundance. It has a very natural, expressive and enthusiastic nature. Its energy relates to the element of fire and a positive attitude to life. It relates to luck, travel and an adventurous spirit. As a philosophical sign it tries to aspire towards the highest principles. Its high vibration creates discernment about what’s right and true, its low vibration can cause judgement and self-righteousness.

As the new year is upon us, what is one thing you can begin to do, and one thing you can stop doing, to further the recognition and bridling of your ego?
